Avon NC Real Estate & Information

Avon NC Real Estate & Information

North Carolina's Outer Banks consist of a string of islands east of the mainland along the Atlantic Coast. The number of shipping lanes, massive storms and treacherous shoals earned the area the unhappy title of "The Graveyard of the Atlantic. Early community leaders sought to make the region safer by installing lifesaving stations along the east coast, but the voluntary system was sorely insufficient.

In 1874, the United States Lifesaving Service constructed seven federally funded stations on the Outer Banks, one of the first being Little Kinnakeet. In 1883, the U.S. Post Office changed the name to Avon Village. Some speculation indicates that the post office named Avon after the English River, but no one knows the details of the change.

Today, the village is a popular tourist destination with Avon NC real estate offering a serene view of the Atlantic between Salvo and Buxton on Hatteras Island. As a census-designated place, as opposed to an incorporated city, Avon falls under the prevue of the Dare Country Board of Commissioners, elected management officials.
