Rodanthe Real Estate

On the easternmost edge of North Carolina, on the northern end of Hatteras Island, the village of Radanthe is home to the first life saving station in America. Once known as Chicamacomico, the community became three separate villages by the early 1900s. Originally North Rodanthe, South Rodanthe and Clark, the Post Office re-named them to Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo. Each area now has an identity of its own.  Although the year-round population is less than 300, like the rest of the communities on the Outer Banks, the number of residents swells during the tourist season.

After the government decommissioned the life saving station in 1954, the buildings fell into disrepair for a number of years. Since 1974, the Chicamacomico Historical Association has been attempting to restore the site and open it as a museum. It is now one of only two life saving stations in the country that are open to the public. It and the Oregon Inlet Station, also near Rodanthe, are on the National Register of Historic Places. Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo are neighboring unincorporated communities in Dare County. The Dare County Board of Commissioners governs Rodanthe real estate.

Rodanthe Parks and Recreation

The Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station is the pride of Rodanthe. From the time it opened as the first station of its kind in the country, the crew worked hard at their primary job, saving lives. In a spectacular effort in 1918, they rescued 42 men from the burning English tanker Mirlo after Germany torpedoed it. The original buildings still stand and are now a museum to honor the heroes that manned them.

For fishing, beach time and amazing views of Pamlico Sound, many visitors come to Oregon Inlet. The National Park Service manages the center located 20 minutes north of the Rodanthe community. The marina is a full-service facility.
