Nags Head Real Estate

Nags Head Real Estate

From its vantage point along the shores of the Northern Beaches, the area known as Nags Head has called to tourists since 1830. When Francis Nixon brought his family there in an effort to escape the malaria that plagued Perquimans County, the only residents were a few poor folk that struggled to survive with farming and salvaging from sunken ships. As friends of Nixon's followed his lead to the vacation spot, the "Bankers" as they called the local inhabitants, sold fish and vegetables to the summer people, learning to profit from the visitors.

The colorful community continues to draw travelers today. Cottages made from scavenged wood sprang up along the coast, forming the historic Cottage Row. The simple architecture stood as the local standard until developers came in the 1970s, but the old families fought to preserve the Nags Head Cottages, and several still stand.
